View on Surrey Street
Description
Front elevation of 33-34 Surrey Street, Westminster, viewed from the corner of Howard Street looking north. These are a pair of three-storey townhouses with basements, built in 1767 and Grade II listed, listing number 1237425. They form part of Kings College Campus. The front doors to each house are accessed by a flight of stairs from a steeply inclined street. The door to 33 is set back inside a squared porch, whereas the door to 34 has an arched roof porch. At the front of the houses are wrought-iron railings. There is an ornate handrail to the left side of the steps to number 33. Dormer windows are visible on the roof line with a tubular handrail to the edge of the roof. The next building is 35 Surrey Street which is a very tall and narrow building of five storeys. This was called The Norfolk Hotel with a 'for sale' sign in the corner. There is a very tall and narrow chimney stack adjacent to number 34. The next building is Aldwych Underground Station, designed by Leslie Green and opened 1906-7. Originally called Strand station and Grade II listed building, listing number 1401034. It is now permanently closed. The building to the right of the image is a public house, with the front of a motor car just visible. The buildings to the right have been demolished and replaced with a modern structure.
