View of Stratton Street
Description
Front elevation of 6 Stratton Street, Westminster. It is a Grade II listed building, listing number 1264239, built in the late-eighteenth century with four storeys and a basement. The view is taken from Mayfair Place which did not exist at the time but was built in the grounds of Devonshire House. The front door has name plates either side. To the front of the house features wrought-iron railings and a large three-bay bow window to the first floor. A cast-iron column supports the front of the bay with wrought-iron railings to the windows, and a flagpole projects from the facade above the roof of the bay. Below the street name plate is a sign for London Life Insurance, which occupied the building at this time. At the end of the nineteenth century, the building was occupied by John Macvicar Anderson and his second son, who were prominent architects. This building still exists; it has been renovated and is now occupied by offices. All the buildings in this area were damaged during the Blitz of World War II.
