Title
Twinings shop in the Strand
Description
Doorway of Twinings, 216 Strand, City of Westminster (south side). Early-nineteenth century shop front of Twinings tea merchant. The portico has a recessed double glazed and panelled door in architrave. The opening is framed by Grecian columns supporting entablature with a raised central die surmounted by a lion and flanked by seated Chinamen, with a central Royal Warrant and the sign 'Twinings'. The entrance is Grade II listed, number 1236754. Thomas Twining became a Freeman of the City in 1701 at the age of 26, by virtue of having served an apprenticeship as a weaver. But by that time he had turned his back on weaving and was learning a new trade working for a wealthy merchant and handling some of the early shipments of tea. In 1706 he bought Tom's Coffee House on the Strand and began his famous tea business. By 1717, Thomas had acquired three adjacent houses and converted them to a shop; it was this building that is now number 216 Strand and which still exists today. A crate of empty milk bottles is by the porch. To the right, number 215 is an office of the Law Accident Insurance Society incorporated in 1907 and dissolved in 1971. This building has been redeveloped and the ground floor is now a coffee shop.
