Barclays Bank in the Strand
Description
View of 413-416 Strand, City of Westminster (north side). A major thoroughfare, the Strand runs east to west from Trafalgar Square to Temple Bar. Named from the Old English 'strond', meaning the edge of a river, as before modern embankments and land reclamation it ran alongside the north bank of the River Thames. A branch of Barclays Bank, originally New Zealand House; the New Zealand Embassy. Designed by architects Crickmay and Sons and completed in 1916. Decorative festoons around some of the windows were carved by John Whitehead and Sons. New Zealand House moved to a new building in 1963. To the left number 417, a narrow three storey building with a shop. Occupied by 'Ponti's Take Away Restaurant' and established in 1890 as The Bun Shop and later The Tram Shed. On the right, The Adelphi Theatre at 411-412 advertises Marilyn! The Musical by Mort Garson about Marilyn Monroe. Built in 1806 as the Sans Pareil, the theatre is Grade II listed, number 1264304. In the foreground a man waits on a traffic island with his bicycle and several other pedestrians and blurred vehicles are in view.
