Description
View of Craven Street on the corner with the Strand, City of Westminster, looking southeast. Originally known as Spur Alley, Craven Street was rebuilt around 1730 when the land was owned by the Craven family and the name changed. Twenty houses were erected on the west side and fifteen on the east side. Number 5-6 Strand is a three-storey building with two tiers of attics and a corner turret. Cast-iron balconies to the attic windows and to the central window of the second floor, which has a semi-circular canopy and an ornate scrolled lintel. The corner third floor window is round with plaster decoration, and the first-floor window has a sign 'To Let, Healey and Baker, Edward Erdman'. On the ground floor is The Strand Corner House which included a Wimpy Bar. To the right is 'Pierre Cardin' menswear shop. Along Craven Street is a two-storey building with two tiers of attics and a basement enclosed by railings. A canopy over an entrance has a sign for 'Double Diamond' beer. This block was demolished and replaced with a high-rise office with residential and retail units.
