Description
View of 139-142 Strand, City of Westminster (south side). A major thoroughfare, the Strand runs east to west from Trafalgar Square to Temple Bar. Named from the Old English 'strond', meaning the edge of a river, as before modern embankments and land reclamation it ran alongside the north bank of the River Thames. Number 142 is a four-storey building with an attic and railings around the second floor. The ground floor is occupied by the 'Balls Brothers Wine Bar and Restaurant'. Balls Brothers were founded in 1860 as a wine merchant and sold in 2011. Previously, 142 was The Turk's Head public house frequented by Samuel Johnson and his friend James Boswell. Number 140-141 form a three-storey building with a balustraded roof parapet. The ground floor is occupied by 'Claude Gill Books' advertising 'Reduced Books'. The company was established in 1945 as 'Books and Careers' and in the 1950s, the Oxford Street branch was one of the largest bookshops in London. Number 139 is a three-storey building occupied by the 'Alfred Marks Bureau', advertising 'Vacancies to Temporary and Permanent Office Staff'. A well-known employment agency mentioned in the 1980 song ‘Temporary Secretary’ by Paul McCartney. These buildings were demolished and on the site is now an office building called Strand Bridge House.
