View of William VI Street
Description
View of William VI Street (formerly King William Street) on the corner with number 430 Strand, City of Westminster. A three-storey terrace with shops on the ground floor, part of a triangular island block of shops and offices between the Strand, Adelaide Street and William IV Street. Built in 1830-32 as part of the West Strand Improvements, planned by architect John Nash and executed by William Herbert. Number 430 is one of the circular corner pavilions, known as "pepper pots", with three storeys and an attic with a balustrade. On the ground floor is 'Alfred Marks Bureau', a well-known employment agency mentioned in the 1980 song ‘Temporary Secretary’ by Paul McCartney. Number 1 William IV Street is undergoing refurbishment, number 2 is 'William Restaurant' advertising Coca Cola and Pepsi. A side entrance at number 3 has a sign the 'Tara Staff Agency', and above this is an ornate cast-iron sign for 'Rifle Makers'. This was Thomas Bland and Son, Gun Manufacturers. Founded in the mid-nineteenth century in Birmingham, the company moved to this address in 1900. The company was sold in 1989 and the block is Grade II* listed, number 1237040.
