Description
View of 179-180 Strand, City of Westminster (south side). At the corner with Norfolk Street which was built in 1682, on part of the site of Arundel House and grounds; the London home of the Duke of Norfolk. Number 179 is a six-storey corner building with attics and a steep pitched roof. Cast-iron railings around the first floor, and parapets around the upper-storey windows. The ground floor is occupied by 'Huggins Chemist, Pharmacie International, Dispensing Chemist'. On the opposite corner of Norfolk Street, number 180 is a five-storey building with The National Bank on the ground floor. Founded as the National Bank of Ireland in 1835, it changed its name to The National Bank in 1859. In 1966 the branches outside Ireland became part of the National Commercial Bank of Scotland, and subsequently the Royal Bank of Scotland. These buildings have been demolished and replaced with a Brutalist building used as a cultural and arts centre, and Norfolk Street no longer exists. In the street are a number of pedestrians, vehicles and a Zebra Crossing.
