Marconi House in the Strand
Description
View of Marconi House, 336-337 Strand, City of Westminster. A six-storey building with attic, faced with Portland Stone, built 1902-03 by Norman Shaw with Runtz and Ford. Columns support the entrance portico, and there are arched windows on the ground floor. It is the surviving part of The Gaiety Theatre development and was originally The Gaiety Theatre Restaurant and Hotel. It is Grade II listed, number 1236757. From 1912 to 1933 it was the headquarters of the Marconi Companies, and later the offices of English Electric. It was from studios on the seventh floor of this building on 11th May 1922 that the first radio programmes from the London Broadcasting Station 2LO were broadcast. In the same year the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) used these studios to start the first regular, licensed, programmed broadcasting service in the world. The building was later used as the headquarters for the Ministry of Civil Aviation, before English Electric returned in 1950. It is now in residential use. Three cars are parked at parking meters.
