Description
View of 164a-165a Strand, City of Westminster. A major thoroughfare, the Strand runs east to west from Trafalgar Square to Temple Bar. Named from the Old English 'strond', meaning the edge of a river, as before modern embankments and land reclamation it ran alongside the north bank of the River Thames. Four-storey late seventeenth-century terraced buildings with attics and shops on the ground floor. Number 165A is a shop advertising 'Cameras' and 'Kodak Film’. Number 164A is the temporary office of the Shern Hall (Methodist) Building Society which merged with the Magnet and North West Building Society in 1967. A notice in the window advertises 'The Equity Offers. The Complete Building Society Services'. Three women and a man are looking in the window. On the first- floor window is a sign for 'Ambassador Agency - Staff- Duplicating'. These buildings were demolished and the site is now part of the Strand Building of Kings College London.
