Building in the Strand
Description
Rear view of 64 Strand, City of Westminster, looking north from Durham Street. A major thoroughfare, the Strand runs east to west from Trafalgar Square to Temple Bar. Named from the Old English 'strond', meaning the edge of a river, as before modern embankments and land reclamation it ran alongside the north bank of the River Thames. Built on the site of Durham Place, home to the Bishops of Durham since 1220. Part of a three-storey building with shops on the ground floor. In 1895 this was Crabb and Perry Tailors. A sign hangs above a side doorway and a gas lamp is fixed to the wall of a two-storey extension. On the opposite side of the Strand are five-storey building with attics at numbers 419-420. The ground-floor shop at 419 is occupied by Signet Shoes. These buildings have been redeveloped.
