St Mary le Strand church in Strand
Description
View of St Mary le Strand church and buildings on both sides of Strand, Covent Garden. A truck with its load covered with a tarpaulin is in traffic, along with other cars and a van. A man is sitting on top of a wheeled ladder near a lamp post and another is working lower down. Many pedestrians are seen nearby. In the background to the left of the church is Bush House, the headquarters building of the BBC World Service from 1940 to 2014, housing all the BBC’s foreign language services. The Portland stone building has six storeys plus an attic. A pediment tops the central range of the building. Dating from 1714-17 and designed by James Gibbs, St Mary le Strand church was Grade I listed in 1958; listing number 1236753. Dating from 1925-35 and designed by the American architect Harvey Wiley Corbett, Bush House was Grade II listed in 1976; listing number 1066492. It was conceived by American industrialist Irving T. Bush, who raised the funds for its construction and after whom it is named. A sign for the railway lost property office hangs from a building to the right. Beyond it, seen obliquely, is the front elevation of Somerset House. The name Somerset House stems from Edward Seymour, who became Duke of Somerset and Lord Protector after Edward VI came to the throne in 1547. He built a palatial residence on the site, then known as Somerset Place. The present Somerset House was created as The New Public Offices to unite scattered government offices in 1776-96 and was designed by Sir William Chambers. The eastern extension for King's College dates from 1829-35 and was designed by Sir Robert Smirke and the western extension of offices to Lancaster Place by Sir James Pennethorne and built in 1853-56. Somerset House and the old King's College building was Grade I listed in 1972; listing number 1237041.
