Description
View of the junction of Villiers Street and Strand, Covent Garden. At left is 32 Strand with a womenswear shop called Fontayne on the ground floor. The shop has a single-storey projection from the building above, on whose roof is an advertisement for City & Central Investments Ltd offering premises in the building. The building still exists. Part of Charing Cross Hotel and railway station is seen at the right. A sign over an ornate archway says Restaurant and Cocktail Bar. A sign points to an entrance to Charing Cross Underground station in Villiers Street. Many pedestrians are on the pavement or crossing the junction. No Entry signs stand at the junction. A police officer on point duty in Strand is signalling to oncoming traffic from the right to stop. Along Villiers Street, a footbridge links the original hotel building on the right to an extension on the left. The footbridge dates from 1878 and still exists. A sign for The Griffin pub can be seen on the ground floor near the footbridge. Dating from 1863-1864 and designed by Edward Middleton Barry, the Charing Cross Hotel was Grade II listed in 1987; listing number 1236707.
