Description
View of a vacant site at 200-202 Strand, Covent Garden. A building of about six storeys and housing a branch of the Huddersfield Building Society on the ground floor was built on the site in the late 1950s. In the picture at the left, it already occupies a smaller building at 203 Strand. It became part of the Yorkshire Building Society. The building still exists. An estate agent's sign on the corner of the site at the junction with Milford Lane says: "Building Site for Disposal". A sign refers to Essex Hall. This Unitarian chapel had stood on the site but was badly damaged by wartime action in 1944, during World War II. A sign on a building in Milford Lane reads "The Sun Engraving Company". To the right, a building under construction is scaffolded at 198 Strand. This opened in 1951 as Ingram House, home of The Illustrated London News and a family of other publications. The Illustrated London News was first published from a building on the same site in 1842 as a weekly news magazine. It closed in 2003. The building that later occupied the site was itself demolished around 2012 and a further commercial block occupies the site. An Austin 10 car is parked in Strand.
