Title
Buildings in Strand
Description
View of the front elevations of buildings at 32-39 Strand, Covent Garden. The buildings have five or six storeys with shops on the ground floor. At number 39 on the left, at the corner with Buckingham Street, the shop is Vaughan, advertising a "genuine sale". Number 37-38 across the junction is Hope Brothers, which has a double-height display window and also has a sale. Number 36 is Strand Studios and 35 is a J. Lyons Co. cafe. A sign over number 34 says it is Regent Jewellers but it also says the premises are to be demolished as part of a Strand widening scheme. It and the rest of the block to the east are already boarded up. Number 33 has a sign for a restaurant advertising good meals served all day. Over the corner of the site is a sign for a demolition company. Advertising company Boro Billposting Company has a large poster on the flank wall, which overlooks Charing Cross Station forecourt, which is out of view. A banner partially seen nearby advertises The Sunday Times newspaper's serialisation of the diaries of Field Marshal Alanbrooke. These had attracted attention because of their criticism of wartime leader Winston Churchill. The buildings no longer exist and a single later development occupies both blocks. Many pedestrians can be seen and a policeman is directing those crossing the road. Two ornate street lights can be seen. Parked in the road are a truck bearing a compressor of the kind used with pneumatic drills, and a handcart, near a pile of rubble in the road.
