Buildings in Strand
Description
View of buildings in Strand, Covent Garden, from a rooftop looking east. The picture is taken from 450-451 Strand, whose roof balustrade is seen at the left. The building still exists. Ahead is a building with a curved facade housing a branch of Barclays Bank at 448 Strand. This forms part of a triangular island block of shops and offices between Strand, Adelaide Street and William IV Street (formerly King William Street). It was built in 1830-32 as part of the West Strand Improvements, planned by architect John Nash and executed by William Herbert. The triangular block was Grade II* listed in 1969; listing number 1237040. Several vehicles can be seen including three London Transport Routemaster buses. On the right are the Eleanor Cross and the Charing Cross Hotel and Station. A series of 12 tall and lavishly decorated stone monuments topped with crosses was erected in a line down part of the east of England by King Edward I in memory of his beloved wife Eleanor of Castile after her death in 1290. Dating from 1864-1865 and designed by Edward Middleton Barry to mirror the original, the Queen Eleanor Memorial Cross was Grade II* listed in 1970; listing number 1236708. Many Austin FX3 London taxis are waiting in the station forecourt around the base of the cross. Advertising company Boro Billposting Company has a large poster on the flank wall that overlooks Charing Cross Station forecourt. A poster nearby advertises The Sunday Times newspaper's serialisation of the diaries of Field Marshal Alanbrooke. These had attracted attention because of their criticism of wartime leader Winston Churchill. The two blocks in Strand beyond the station no longer exist and a single later development occupies both blocks. Also in the forecourt are two trucks with the British Railways logo on the side. Dating from 1863-1864 and also designed by Barry, the Charing Cross Hotel was Grade II listed in 1987; listing number 1236707.
