View of the front elevation of a detached building at 6-7 Strand, Covent Garden, housing Strand Corner House cafe. The stone facade has many flamboyant classical features including an open curved pediment at the second floor encasing swags and scrolls. Signs on the cafe say it is open all night. The building survived until at least 1977 but no longer exists. The cafe was opened in 1915 by J. Lyons Co. and became part of a large chain of Lyons Corner Houses. It was replaced by a later block of about 10 storeys but that has also been demolished. Visible part-way along Northumberland Street to the right is a brick-built tower, likely the chimney for a steam engine powering the presses of the Pall Mall Gazette, a campaigning evening newspaper which was at 2 Northumberland Street. The newspaper was merged with The Evening Standard in 1923 and the chimney no longer exists. Several pedestrians can be seen on the pavement. Buildings to the right of the image in Northumberland Street also no longer exist and a later development occupies the site. A small crane can be seen on the vacant site in front. The site is protected by a fence at the edge of the pavement of the Strand.
