View of a building site at 105-109 Strand, Covent Garden. Some scaffolding and steelwork is visible but the building has not risen above the level of hoardings surrounding the site. These carry many advertisements including for The Daily News newspaper, the Hotel Hermitage and Queen's Hotel, Nice, France, Germolene antiseptic cream and Bovril beef drink. The Palladium theatre advertises The Whirl of the World, a musical revue which opened in 1923 and ran for 627 performances. A sign for Bolsom Bros, footwear retailer, says it is open as usual at 157 Strand next to Somerset House, with an arrow pointing right. An estate agent's sign announces "Magnificent modern premises in the course of erection, frontage to the Strand 88 ft". The building under construction, Norman House, was designed by A. F. A. Trehearne and C. Norman and still exists. At the right is 104 Strand and the entrance to Savoy Buildings, with Harris K. Boots, a footwear retailer, on the ground floor. Built as an extension to The Savoy Hotel complex in 1903-04, 96-104 Strand was Grade II listed in 1987 as Simpson's; listing number 1236740.
