Somerset House in Strand
Description
View of buildings in Strand, Covent Garden, including Somerset House on the right and the church of St Mary le Strand on the left. The facade of Somerset House, in Portland stone, is nine windows wide with nine monumental arches at ground level, the central three offering access to the quadrangle behind. The upper level includes giant Corinthian columns. Somerset House was created as The New Public Offices to unite scattered government offices in 1776-96 and was designed by Sir William Chambers. The eastern extension for King's College dates from 1829-35 and was designed by Sir Robert Smirke and the western extension of offices to Lancaster Place by Sir James Pennethorne and built in 1853-56. Somerset House and the old King's College building was Grade I listed in 1972; listing number 1237041. Dating from 1714-17 and designed by James Gibbs, St Mary le Strand church was Grade I listed in 1958; listing number 1236753. The picture also shows a horse-drawn hansom cab and two motor buses including a number 11 heading west. A car is parked at the left. Many pedestrians are seen on the pavement. The seven houses visible to the left of Somerset House, numbers 152-158 Strand, survive but the others no longer exist. King's College occupies the site. Dating from the late-seventeenth or early-eighteenth centuries, 152 and 153 Strand were Grade II listed in 1974; listing number 1264442.
