Title
Strand Corner House in Strand
Description
View of the front elevation of a detached building at 6-7 Strand, Covent Garden, housing Strand Corner House cafe at the corner with Craven Street. The stone facade has many flamboyant classical features including an open curved pediment at the second floor encasing swags and scrolls. A sign on the first floor advertises space to let. Outside is a newspaper vendor with a bill for The Evening Standard and an advertisement for The Daily Mail. The building survived until at least 1977 but no longer exists. The cafe was opened in 1915 by J. Lyons Co. and became part of a large chain of Lyons Corner Houses. It was replaced by a later block of about 10 storeys but that has also been demolished. Several pedestrians can be seen on the pavement. The building on the right of the image is Grand Buildings at 1-3 Strand at the corner with Northumberland Street. Part of its top floor is scaffolded with a scaffolding and canvas structure on the roof. It still exists.
