Title
Building in William IV Street
Description
View of the William IV Street elevation of a triangular island block of shops and offices between Strand, Adelaide Street and William IV Street (formerly King William Street) in Covent Garden. The buildings date from 1830-32 and were part the West Strand Improvements, planned by architect John Nash and executed by William Herbert. In the image, much of the site has been demolished, with some facade retained behind scaffolding, as part of work by Frederick Gibberd & Partners that included modernised premises for Coutts Bank, the main occupant. Piles of scaffolding poles awaiting use stand in the street. Some oil drums and a compressor can be seen and a crane rises over the site. The triangular block was Grade II* listed in 1969; listing number 1237040.
