Title
Building in Adelaide Street
Description
View of the Adelaide Street elevation of a triangular island block of shops and offices between Strand, Adelaide Street and William IV Street (formerly King William Street) in Covent Garden. The buildings date from 1830-32 and were part the West Strand Improvements, planned by architect John Nash and executed by William Herbert. In the image, much of the site has been demolished, with some facade retained behind scaffolding, as part of work by Frederick Gibberd & Partners that included modernised premises for Coutts Bank, the main occupant. A sign for building company McAlpine hangs from the scaffolding, which is anchored by temporary brick buttresses. Two skips filled with rubble stand in the street. Buildings at the left are in Chandos Street. The demolition has allowed a view through the site to the former Charing Cross Hospital in William IV Street. The triangular block was Grade II* listed in 1969; listing number 1237040. Dating from 1831-34 and designed by Decimus Burton as part of Nash's West Strand improvements, the east side of the former Charing Cross Hospital was Grade II listed in 1970; listing number 1066516. Dating from 1831 and built as the Ophthalmic Hospital and part of Nash's West Strand Improvements, probably executed by William Herbert, the western corner block of the former hospital was also Grade II listed in 1987; listing number 1224573.
