Title
Buildings in Strand
Description
View of a corner building in a style known as pepper pot at the junction of William IV Street, Covent Garden, to the right and Strand to the left. The building is scaffolded and the ground floor boarded up. The scaffolding bears the name of the McAlpine construction company. Building materials are piled up in the road and several pedestrians can be seen, including a man crossing the road. Part of the block has been demolished to the right of the picture and a crane stands on the site. It forms part of a triangular island block of shops and offices between Strand, Adelaide Street and William IV Street (formerly King William Street). It was built in 1830-32 as part of the West Strand Improvements, planned by architect John Nash and executed by William Herbert. The block was substantially rebuilt in the 1970s as part of work by Frederick Gibberd & Partners that included modernised premises for Coutts Bank, the main occupant. The triangular block was Grade II* listed in 1969; listing number 1237040.
