Description
View of buildings in Strand, Covent Garden, across a traffic island east of St Clement Danes church. Towards the left is a building of five storeys that has a branch of National Covent Garden Bank on the ground floor at 217 Strand. To the right at 215 Strand is building of six storeys with a branch of Planet Building Society on the ground floor. The George pub and restaurant at 213 Strand has a large sign for Worthington beer across its facade. To its right, a building at 212 Strand has a branch of Bewlays tobacconist on the ground floor. A building with a sandwich bar on the ground floor has large advertising posters above, including one for Silk Cut cigarettes. The buildings still exist. On the island is an ornate lamp standard with four lights on scroll brackets and a fifth above. Described as a lamp standard-ventilator, it was made by Walter Macfarlane & Co at the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow. Dating from the late-nineteenth century, it was Grade II listed in 1970; listing number 1264443. Striped bollards edge the island. Railings surround separate entrances to men's and women's toilets underground. Several pedestrians can be seen.
