Beaufort Buildings in Strand
Description
View of Beaufort Buildings in Strand after it was badly damaged by fire in March 1875. The building was used in the manufacturing of perfumes by Eugene Rimmel from 1837 until the fire. A damaged wall surrounded by rubble gives addresses for the Rimmel company in the Netherlands, Belgium and France as well as the UK. A long ladder is leaning against the wall. A hand-written caption on the print, partly cropped, reads: "Beaufort House, Beaufort Buildings, Strand destroyed by fire, used as Rimmel's Perfumery Manufactory, view from Beaufort Buildings looking north-east". The Savoy Hotel now occupies the site and Carting Lane runs nearby.
