Buildings in Victoria Embankment
Description
View of buildings in Victoria Embankment, City of Westminster, and a statue of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Dating from about 1877, the bronze statue of the great engineer was created by Baron Marochetti and stands on a Portland stone pedestal by Norman Shaw. It was Grade II listed in 1958; listing number 1357346. Buildings behind form part of King's College in the Strand. The two-storey building nearest the camera dates from 1933 and bears a coat of arms over the door. These are the arms of King George IV, who was on the throne when the college was founded and was its patron. The motto below "sancte et sapienter" (with holiness and wisdom) is embodied by the supporters either side of the arms, a woman holding a cross and a man in academic robes holding a book. The buildings behind are the college's King's Building including parts built in the nineteenth century as an extension to Somerset House. Somerset House was created as The New Public Offices to unite scattered government offices in 1776-96 and was designed by Sir William Chambers. The eastern extension for King's College dates from 1829-35 and was designed by Sir Robert Smirke and the western extension of offices to Lancaster Place by Sir James Pennethorne and built in 1853-56. Somerset House and the old King's College building was Grade I listed in 1972; listing number 1237041.
