Interior of Lloyds Bank in Strand
Description
View of the entrance hall at a branch of Lloyds Bank at 222-225 Strand, Covent Garden. The hall is lavishly decorated in wood and ceramic. The premises were built as the restaurant for The Royal Courts of Justice, known as Palsgrave Restaurant, in 1882-3 by Goymour Cuthbert and W. Wimble. They later became the Law Courts Branch of Lloyds Bank in 1894. The bank closed the branch in 2017. Palsgrave, from the German Pfalzgraf meaning count Palatine, was one of the titles of King Frederick V of Bohemia (1596-1632). His marriage to Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of King James VI of Scotland and James I of England and Ireland, in 1613 in London was an occasion of much celebration. The bank site had earlier been the location of The Palsgrave Head Tavern, named after Frederick, and said to be a favourite haunt of the playwright Ben Johnson. The former Lloyds Bank at 222-225 Strand was Grade II listed in 1987; listing number 1236755.
