Description
View of a pair of circular buildings at 448 and 449 Strand, Covent Garden. Number 448 is a branch of Barclays Bank. Numbers 448 and 449 Strand form part of a triangular island block of shops and offices between Strand, Adelaide Street and William IV Street (formerly King William Street). It was built in 1830-32 as part of the West Strand Improvements, planned by architect John Nash and executed by William Herbert. Number 448-449 are circular corner pavilions, known as "pepper pots", with three storeys and an attic with a balustrade. At the right is the Queen Eleanor Memorial Cross, technically a neo-Eleanor Cross from the Victorian period. The crosses were a series of 12 tall and lavishly decorated stone monuments topped with crosses erected in a line down part of the east of England. King Edward I had them built in memory of his beloved wife Eleanor of Castile after her death in 1290. The triangular block was Grade II* listed in 1969; listing number 1237040. Dating from 1864-1865 and designed by Edward Middleton Barry to mirror the original, the Queen Eleanor Memorial Cross was Grade II* listed in 1970; listing number 1236708. A number of pedestrians can be seen as well as many cars, vans and taxis.
