Title
Gaiety Theatre in Strand
Description
View of two buildings in Strand, Covent Garden, including The Gaiety Theatre. The buildings were newly built at the time of the picture after many had been demolished to allow for the creation of Aldwych and a widening of the Strand. The Gaiety Theatre, seen at the left of the picture, moved to the site in 1903 when its previous home a few metres to the west was set for demolition. Its entrance is at the corner with Aldwych to the left beneath a dome. In the centre of the image is a building of six storeys plus double attic storey and nine windows wide in its Strand elevation. Its ground floor bears signs saying it is the new home of Short's. A ladder is leaning against one of its side windows with some trestles and a workman's handcart are nearby. Two step ladders can be seen near the main entrance, where signs say it houses the Gaiety restaurant and buffet. Many pedestrians and cyclists can be seen and a few horse-drawn carts. A horse-drawn bus is seen at the left. Also to the left are five levels of advertising posters, including for Blackpool, Cantrell & Cochrane's ginger ale, Perrier water, Globe polish and Nestle milk.
