Title
St Clement Danes church in Strand
Description
View from an elevated position of the church of St Clement Danes, Covent Garden, with the Strand passing either side of it, looking west. Many buildings had been demolished in the early-twentieth century to allow the creation of Aldwych and widening of Strand. Many carts, cabs and pedestrians can be seen. In the foreground on a traffic island are underground public toilets, ornate lamp posts and an extending ladder on wheels of a kind used by fire brigades. In the distance is an advertisement for Spillman & Co., a furniture mover. The church was rebuilt in 1680-82 by Sir Christopher Wren, reusing but recasing fifteenth-century masonry of the west tower. The tower was completed with a spire by James Gibbs in 1719. It was gutted in World War II and restored 1955-58 by W. A. S. Lloyd. The church was Grade I listed in 1958; listing number 1237099. The most elaborate of the lamp standards has four lights on scroll brackets with a fifth above. Described as a lamp standard-ventilator, it was made by Walter Macfarlane & Co. at the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow. Dating from the late-nineteenth century, it was Grade II listed in 1970; listing number 1264443. In the distance, the spire of the church of St Mary le Strand can be seen. A building of about five storeys at the right of the image stands at number 265 Strand. It no longer exists and a later office building occupies the site. Beyond it is the newly created Aldwych leading off to the right.
