Title
St Clement Danes church in Strand
Description
View from an elevated position of the church of St Clement Danes, Covent Garden, with the Strand passing either side of it, looking east. The vacant site in the foreground was later to house Australia House, home of the Australian High Commission, with Aldwych running off to the left. The picture shows many horse-drawn carts and hansom cabs. On the right are buildings from 211-234 Strand, many with shops on the ground floor. Many buildings had been demolished in the early-twentieth century to allow the creation of Aldwych and widening of the Strand. The church was rebuilt in 1680-82 by Sir Christopher Wren, reusing but recasing the fifteenth-century masonry of the west tower. The tower was completed with a spire by James Gibbs in 1719. It was gutted in World War II and restored 1955-58 by W. A. S. Lloyd. The church was Grade I listed in 1958; listing number 1237099. To the left of the church are The Royal Courts of Justice. One of the jewels of the High Victorian Gothic Revival, a large, national courtroom building of 1874 to 1883, designed and built by George Edmund Street and completed by Arthur E. Street and Sir Arthur Blomfield. Stylistically, it combines thirteenth-century English and French architecture with Italian elements. Built predominantly in Portland stone, it was Grade I listed in 1970; listing number 1264258.
