Title
House in Ponsonby Place
Description
Front elevation of 14 Ponsonby Place, Pimlico. The terrace of houses was built by Thomas Cubitt in the early-nineteenth century. Cubitt was contracted by Lord Grosvenor in 1824 to develop Pimlico to satisfy an increasing demand for housing. The area was dominated by Millbank Penitentiary, a massive prison built between 1812-1821 on an octagonal site, the southern perimeter of which determined the layout of Ponsonby Place. The three-storey house is brick with stucco at ground-floor level and has a basement with spearhead railings. A Rover P4 is parked on the street. Ponsonby Place lies within the Millbank Conservation Area created in 1969, and its terraced housing designated by Westminster Council as unlisted buildings of merit, and still extant as of 2023.
