Description
First-floor ante-room at 1 Richmond Terrace, City of Westminster. Richmond Terrace occupies the site of Richmond House, the London residence of the Dukes of Richmond, which stood within what had been the Privy Garden attached to the old royal palace of Whitehall. Richmond Terrace was designed 1819 by architect Thomas Chawner and built 1822-4 by George and Henry Harrison. In 1882 the hardwood panelling was undertaken by Messrs Mellier in French seventeenth-century style, with rich scrollwork framed panels, here featuring a head on the door lintel, and above panels with urn with fruit, a parrot, and swags of flowers. The panelled door is in similar style. The room is an office with books on the desk, papers and a candlestick telephone. At the time this was the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The rear parts of Richmond Terrace were demolished in 1979, and in 1982-6 the surviving facade and end wings were restored and interiors reinstated and incorporated into a new structure, Richmond House by Whitfield Associates. On completion the building was occupied by the Department for Health and Social Security (DHSS) and the whole named Richmond House. The whole is Grade II* listed number 1235174.
