Description
Second-floor front room chimneypiece at 1 Robert Street, City of Westminster. Running north west from Adelphi Terrace, and what was the river front, now Victoria Embankment Gardens, Robert Street was built on the site of Milzens Wharf by Robert Adam. Numbers 1-3 are now the sole survivors of Adam's Adelphi riverside development. Numbers 1 and 2 built in 1768-74 by Robert Adam and his brothers was one of the first houses in London to be purpose built as letting flats or chambers. Three storey with an attic storey, basements and dormered mansard. A carved wooden chimneypiece with two roundels on the apron. Egg and dart decoration below the mantelshelf. Floral decoration on the jambs. In the fireplace an electric grate. Numbers 1 and 2 are Grade II* listed number 1235244. From 1908 numbers 1-3 were known collectively as Adelphi Terrace House. Among the residents were from 1917–18, John Galsworthy the English novelist and playwright whose notable works include The Forsyte Saga. Sir James Barrie, resident 1911–37, the Scottish novelist and playwright, best remembered as the creator of Peter Pan.
