Description
Second-floor rear room at 180 Queen's Gate, South Kensington. Queen's Gate runs south from Kensington Gardens to Old Brompton Road. Laid out in the mid-nineteenth century it was originally known as Albert's Road. Number 180 is a red-brick corner house in Queen Anne Revival style designed by R. Norman Shaw built in 1883-85. Multipaned bay window. Marble chimneypiece with carved wooden mantelshelf. Gas fire within the grate. A decision by the London County Council was taken to redevelop the site in 1957, and in spite of its successor the Greater London Council's later attempts to preserve it, it was demolished in 1971. Its site, as well as that of former numbers 177-185 Queen's Gate, is now occupied by the South Kensington Campus of the Imperial College London. In 1901 the house was occupied by barrister Henry Francis Makins, his wife Kezia, three daughters, a son, granddaughter and 10 servants.
