Interior of a house in Grosvenor Street
Description
View of chimneypiece in room 107 on the first floor of 16 Grosvenor Street, Mayfair. The chimneypiece is of moderate size and is of white and darker-veined marble. It is classicised with pillars and cornice depicting putti playing in an idyllic scene. The edges of the mantel are delicately carved and there is a marble hearth and fender. The edges of the chimney breast have pilasters. In the fireplace is a steel grate with ornate metal swags. Above the mantel hangs a Cubist-style still-life. Number 16 was built 1720 by Thomas Ripley, whose patron was the statesman Sir Robert Walpole. Famous occupants have included, between 1912-24, George Keppel and his wife Alice (a confidante of King Edward VII). The property is Grade II listed, listing number 1228512.
