Description
View of main staircase in 59 Grosvenor Street, Mayfair. The entrance area has chequered-square stone flooring, a sash window looking onto area railings, a reception desk and a grand staircase that retains the original eighteenth-century wood carvings. A woman is seated at the polished reception desk on which stands an telephone, intercom and an electric typewriter. A chimney breast is set at a diagonal to the front and side walls, with a dark-veined marble chimneypiece. The walls of the entrance and the stairwell are wood-panelled and painted white. The dark wood staircase is carpeted and carved, including twisted balusters in groups of three on each tread, and an elegantly out-turned newel at the foot of the stairs. 59, built 1723 as a townhouse but now in commercial use, is Grade II listed, listing number 1066703.
