Title
Interior of Chesterfield House in Curzon Street
Description
A view of a double staircase at Chesterfield House, a grand mansion that stood just off Curzon Street, Mayfair. The elaborate balusters include horn of plenty motifs and swags and the emblem of the order of the garter. The painting on the wall above the staircase is 'Head of Cyrus Brought to Queen Tomyris' by Peter Paul Rubens, now hanging in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, USA. At the time of the photograph the painting was the property of Henry George Charles Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood, who lived at Chesterfield House when in London. The painting was acquired by the museum in 1941 for $53,500. The London townhouse was built between 1747 and 1752 by Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773), statesman and man of letters. It no longer exists, having been demolished in 1937; an apartment block of the same name occupies the site.
