Norway House in Cockspur Street
Description
Front elevation of Norway House, 21-24 Cockspur Street, Westminster. Nine-storey building built in 1914 by architects Metcalfe and Greig. Gilded statue of Norwegian King Olaf (1015-1028) installed by Gustav Laerum when the building became the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce in 1920. Norwegian architect J. T. Westbye was commissioned to add a heraldic shield and other ornate designs around the door. Home to the Norwegian Club from 1924. This building came to play an important role during World War II, when many Norwegian institutions and government bodies were housed there. King Haakon VII and the members of his Norwegian government-in-exile became regular visitors to the Club. In 1997, the building was sold and, after a couple of years sharing the premises of the Danish Club, moved to the Naval & Military Club, also known as The In & Out, in 2000. More recently the building has housed the London flagship of a Thai restaurant chain.
