Title
Crosse & Blackwell buildings in Charing Cross Road
Description
A view of the front elevations of two warehouse buildings at 151-155 and 157 Charing Cross Road, West End, serving a Crosse & Blackwell jam and pickle factory. The former has a turret at the corner with Sutton Row. Both were designed by architect Reginald St Aubyn Roumieu, trading as Roumieu & Aitchison. Number 151-155 had been started under his father, Robert Lewis Roumieu, about 1877 and was completed after 1885. Number 157 was completed by 1893. Crosse & Blackwell occupied several sites in the area. Number 157 was converted about 1927 into the Astoria theatre. Beyond the warehouses on the left at number 167 is the Excelsior pub. The area shown was demolished about late 2009 to make way for the expansion of Tottenham Court Road station. Many pedestrians can be seen on the pavement.
