Description
A view of 55 Broadway, Westminster, the headquarters of London Underground and the entrance to St James's Park Station. The cruciform building has seven storeys including a two-storey podium covering the whole site. Several pedestrians can be seen. At the left is the side elevation of St Ermin's Hotel in Caxton Street, with shops at the ground floor. These include The Challoner Service at number 17 Broadway and Collins dry cleaning at number 16. Number 55 Broadway was built in 1927-9 to the design of Charles Holden as the headquarters of Underground Electric Railways of London Ltd (UERL) under Lord Ashfield and Frank Pick, later of London Transport. It includes sculpture by Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill, Allan Wyon, Henry Moore, Samuel Rabinovitch, Eric Aumonier and Alfred Gerrard. It was Grade I listed in 1970; listing number 1219790. Dating from 1887-9, St Ermin's Hotel was Grade II listed in 1987; listing number 1292333.
