Buildings in Bow Street
Description
A view of Bow Street with, on the left, the front elevations of the Royal Opera House and Floral Hall. The opera house is scaffolded. In the distance is a branch of Midland Bank on the ground floor of 19 and 20 Bow Street with EA Shaw & Partners, estate agents, in the floors above. On the right is Bow Street Magistrates Court and Police Station. Many cars are parked in the street including a BMC1100 with registration number TJH415D near the camera and, on the right, a Ford Cortina Mark I with registration number HKM187D. An AEC truck of the company Trowbridge and carrying a Freightliner container is heading along Bow Street. Near the camera is a hand cart loaded with sacks of vegetables. The opera house presents a grand, pedimented portico with six Corinthian columns on a tall podium that once was a porte cochere and is now the foyer entrance. Next to it is the glass and steel Floral Hall, formerly an adjunct to the opera house and now a bar and restaurant space. Rebuilt in 1857-8 by Edward Middleton Barry, the Royal Opera House was Grade I listed in 1970; listing number 1066392. Dating from 1858-9 and also designed by Barry but rebuilt later, Floral Hall was Grade II listed in 1973; listing number 1357231. The bank building at 5 Broad Court and 19 and 20 Bow Street, dating from 1897, was Grade II listed in 1987; listing number 1066402. Dating from 1879-80, the former Bow Street Magistrates Court and Police Station was Grade II listed in 1973; listing number 1066393.
