Interior of Uxbridge House in Burlington Gardens
Description
View of a partial view of decorative plasterwork on a ceiling of a first-floor room at Uxbridge House, 7 Burlington Gardens and 1 Old Burlington Street, Mayfair. Moulded leaf patterns can be seen within geometric-shaped panels. A light chain can be seen hanging from the central rose. The building was designed by Giacome Leoni for Lord Clifton in 1721-23 and was initially known as Queensbury House. It was later altered and enlarged by John Vardy and Joseph Bonomi for Lord Uxbridge in 1785-89 and renamed Uxbridge House. In 1855 it was converted to a bank by Philip Hardwick and used as the West End branch of the Bank of England until 1930 when it was sold to the Bank of Scotland. In the early twenty-first century it became the London flagship store of American fashion retailer Abercrombie and Fitch. It stands empty as of 2024. It is Grade II* listed, listing number 1357241.
