Ferndale in Nightingale Lane
View of Ferndale, The Home For Aged Jews at 105 Nightingale Lane, Balham, looking south across well-maintained front gardens. Ferndale was gifted by Sydney James Stern in 1907 (as commemorated by the inscription on the tower), originally to provide a home for 'respectable and indigent persons of the Jewish religion'. By 2001 the building (renamed Nightingale House in 1960 and later 'Nightingale' in 1997) provided residential and nursing home facilities for 300 residents with an average age of 88 years. The original mid-nineetenth century Italianate house built by George Jennings for himself, is Grade II listed, listing number 1065510. A blue plaque on the front of the building commemorates former resident boxer Ted "Kid" Lewis (born Gershon Mendeloff). Vehicles seen in front of the building include an Austin A30, a Vanden Plas 1300 (seen with visitors) a Triumph Dolomite along with a food delivery truck.
