Title
Buildings in Bruton Street
Description
A view of the front elevations of eighteenth-century townhouses at 12-20 Bruton Street, Mayfair. The buildings vary in design but most are four storeys plus basement and dormered mansard and are three windows wide. Exception are numbers 16 and 17, which are grander. The latter is designed in palatial style with six engaged Corinthian columns on a tall first floor. The double-fronted building is five windows wide and has three storeys including a set-back mansard. Two angled flagpoles project from the entranceway, where a reception cabin has been built. The future Queen Elizabeth II was born in the house on 21 April 1926 when it was the home of her maternal grandparents, the Earl and Countess Strathmore. Several cars are parked in the street. None of the buildings exist anymore, and an office block now stands on the site.
