Title
Ingleton House in Rectory Grove
Description
A view of the back of the single-storey building which was once used as a children's home chapel at Ingleton House, 4 Rectory Grove, Clapham. The chapel which was built in c1912 was designed by Lionel Grace as a chapel for St Hugh's Boys Home (later called Ingleton House Boys Home) which was run by an Anglican religious society named the Society of the Good Shepherd and was based at Ingleton House between 1903 and 1938. The chapel consisted of a wooden panelled nave, a wooden panelled apse with altar, collegiate style seating and an organ gallery at its west end which was said to have been decorated with four cherubs. In the photograph can be seen three round windows at the side of the nave of the chapel and the tiled roof of the apse at the end of the chapel. On the left hand side of the chapel can be seen a part of the former single-storey hall which was built around the same time as the chapel in c1912 and was once used as the refectory for the children's home. Beyond the wall and fence can be seen trees and beyond that the side wall of the neighbouring Grade II* listed (Historic England listing of 1955, listing number 1121980) church of St Paul, Clapham.
