Title
Ingleton House in Rectory Grove
Description
A view of the side and entrance to Ingleton House, 4 Rectory Grove, Clapham. The single to five-storey (including the basement) building was from 1903-1938 a children's home for boys known as St Hugh's Boys Home (later called Ingleton House Boys Home) run by an Anglican religious society named the Society of the Good Shepherd. Ingleton House was formed out of two Georgian houses (built around the 1790s) and was originally numbered 2-4 Rectory Grove and later re-numbered 4 Rectory Grove. Some of the building's Georgian features can be seen in the photograph such as the sash windows above the entrance arch. The two Georgian houses likely became one building and in c1912 Ingleton House was altered with the addition of a refectory (visible on the left hand side of the photograph with a dormer window set into its roof) and a chapel designed by the architect Lionel Grace (to the left of the building not visible in the photograph). The chapel which was later numbered 4a Rectory Grove was used by the CAVE (Community and Voluntary Education) School until the school closed in c2005. In 2009 the chapel was given a new use as Clapham Pottery.
