Title
House and shop in Rectory Grove
Description
A view of the front elevations of early nineteenth-century buildings at 45-47a Rectory Grove, Clapham. Number 45 on the left is a small house with the front entrance reached by a small flight of steps; a For Sale board is attached to one of its first-floor windows. Between the house and number 47 is a set of iron railings. The neighbouring two-storey number 47 has a 'General Stores' shop front. Various products can be seen in the window including tins, a jar of marmite, sources and Persil. Advertisements on the shop include 'Brooke Bond Tea', 'Green Shield stamps', 'Findus', 'Smedley's' and what appears to be 'Ovaltine'. Stacked in the street outside the shop can be seen two empty milk crates. On the far right next to the shop is a window and side door of nineteenth-century industrial premises at 47a. Post-war maps describe the building as an engineering works. Numbers 45 and 47 have survived. The shop at 47 eventually closed and although the shop front remained, the building was converted into housing accommodation and railings were erected in front of the property to mark it as private housing. The neighbouring industrial buildings were demolished at an unknown date and replaced by three-storey housing c1980s.
