Ashburton House in Putney Heath
Description
View of the front of Ashburton House, Putney Heath, Putney. Ashburton House was built between 1853-54 by William Harrison in the Elizabethan style. It has a distinctive pattern of light coloured brickwork across the entire front elevation. The front door is below a large bay window, with a balustrade above on the roof line with a window in the attic. Behind is a further storey with elaborate chimney stacks either side. Either side of the balustrade are gabled attics with elaborate finials to the roof, which features eight distinctive chimney stacks. There are many broken panes of glass across the frontage and some of the windows are boarded up. The grounds are overgrown and covered in snow. Among the occupants of Ashburton House was John Carlisle, a civil engineer and ship owner who managed the Blue Star Line. This house was demolished in the early 1950s and the Ashburton Housing estate covers the area.
