Description
Rear view and garden elevation of Gifford House, Putney Heath, Putney, seen from across the garden pond. The grounds are overgrown and the windows boarded up. To the left is a circular wing of the house with a stone balustrade on the roofline with a domed roof. Gifford House was built c1760 and was owned by the Charrington brewery family in 1892. During World War I it became a Military Hospital until 1919, when it became "The Queen Alexandra Hospital and Home for Discharged Soldiers In memory of Lady Ripon”, until it closed in 1933. It was demolished in the 1950s and its site is now occupied by The Ashburton Housing Estate.
